OES2 fanboy
I must admit it, I really like the new Open Enterprise Server 2 from N. It’s a great product with a lot of nice features
- Virtualized NetWare
- eDirectory integrated DHCP/DNS on Linux
- Dynamic Storage Technology
- DFS
When I’m doing presentations and demos about this product it’s always fun to see the faces of old-skool NetWare admins when I’m starting a NetWare inside Xen on top of Linux.

Groupwise and SugarCRM
Since I’m quite interested in SugarCRM I was happy to read the following announcement:
The Riva product would allow integration of certain groupwise information into SugarCRM and vice versa.
Counting down to the groupwiser summit, still 1 week… Looking forward to the labs about running mobile server on Linux and clustering groupwise.

unstable.be or xn--unstbl-eua6b.be
I read somewhere that starting from next year dns.be will allow people to use special characters (accent , umlaut) in their .be domain names.
The so called Internationalized domain names (IDN). I don’t really see the need or use of such a system.
Luckily they designed it that way that changes to the existing DNS infrastructure are not needed because all the magic happens on the client side. The special characters are translated into regular ascii characters.
I think this will become another possible DNS problem that confuses people and makes things more complicated.

Give Novell a break…
Quite often I hear people complaining ,nagging , hating, swearing, …. Novell for various reasons.
- Novell is not open-source enough?
- Novell is making deals with microsoft
-…
To those people I would like to say the following: “Give Novell a break”.
Consider the following things:
- Novell is coming from an entire closed source environment and the whole open source thing is relative new to them. It takes some time. So don’t compare them for instance with RedHat (they have different backgrounds)
- Linux is _not_ the only solution Novell is selling. It’s just an important part of their strategy. They are also selling Identity Management solutions , Groupware solutions , Desktop and asset management solutions. Linux is just the platform for these products.
- For a large number of old school Novell customers Linux is just the OS, they don’t really care about it. They were used to their good old stable Netware and they are now adopting Linux because it is the alternative Novell is proposing for the future and Netware will disappear.
- Novell is an important contributor to various open source projects. E.g openSUSE , Beagle , Banshee , Evolution , Heartbeat , Kernel , Linux Driver Projects, Gnome , KDE , …
